DANA POINT, CA — On the ground, the 4,000-gallon sewage spill darkening Dana Point waters may be difficult to see.

Orange County pilot and photographer Wesley Parsons shared these photos he shot while piloting a Joy Air Airplane Tours aircraft over Dana Point Harbor Thursday morning.

The spill was reported in Dana Point Wednesday evening, prompting county health officials to close Doheny State Beach until further notice.

According to officials, the spill was found in the water near the area where Doheny State Beach and San Juan Creek meet in Dana Point.

According to the Orange County Health Care Agency, the spill was triggered by an overflow in a main city sewer line in San Juan Capistrano. The leak affects 1,500 feet of ocean water up the coast, and 1,500 feet down the coast of that area, officials said.

The water will be monitored until it meets “acceptable standards,” officials said.

The spill was reported just before the Orange County Health Care Agency extended its rain advisory for all of Orange County’s beaches, oceans and harbors until at least Sunday, March 19.

“The Environmental Health staff advises swimmers that levels of bacteria can rise significantly in ocean and bay waters adjacent to storm drains, creeks and rivers during and after rainstorms,” an agency representative said.
